    Cool New JA App!

    JA Build Your Future

JA Build Your Future is a new app that helps teens, their parents and teachers break down the cost of achieving young people’s career goals into real, easy to understand numbers. Created jointly by Junior Achievement USA and PwC, JA Build Your Future helps teens explore potential future income from a desired career and evaluate the cost of post-secondary education to help them make informed decisions.

In JA Build Your Future, teens can assess more than 100 careers, see what levels of education are required, then calculate the cost of education. Teens can then adjust the level of money they and their parents may contribute, combined with student loans they may need to secure. At the end of the exercise, teens are given a Return on Investment (ROI) score between 1 and 5. The score helps teens and their parents create a roadmap for success that will take them from choosing a career to calculating the cost of achieving it.

JA Build Your Future works on Apple and Android phones and tablets. Get the app now at Google Play. Or, download JA Build Your Future for Apple iPhone or iPad now!

Why is financial literacy for our children important?

    Piggy Banks with savings chart

Imagine how life would be different if we had learned at an early age how to manage money wisely and invest it for the future.

Our next generation of adults (18- to 34-year-olds) are more likely to be less financially capable than our previous generations, with 23% spending more than their household income, 68% not having three months of expenses saved in case of an emergency, 34% engaging in expensive, non-bank borrowing, and averaging only 2.6 correct out of 5 questions covering concepts of economics and finance expressed in everyday life.   Nearly 44% of Americans don’t have enough savings or other liquid assets to stay out of poverty for more than three months if they lose their income. Almost a third have no savings accounts at all.

Wealthy Habits offers a free 3-day program that will touch on those important basics 101 concepts but will also cover the importance of preparing for their fast approaching adult responsibilities and the problems associated with bad debt and irresponsible money management.

GADOE Student Advisory Council Accepting Applications

The Georgia Department of Education encourages APS students in grades 9-12 to apply for State School Superintendent John Barge’s 2013-2014 Student Advisory Council.
State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge is accepting applications through September 13, 2013.
The members of the Student Advisory Council meet three times during the school year with the State School Superintendent to discuss how decisions made at the state level affect students throughout Georgia.  Members are advisors and act as liaisons between the Department of Education (GaDOE) and the students of Georgia. Superintendent Barge will conduct the meetings, which will also feature various GaDOE personnel providing further information.

“I am excited about getting to know a new group of student advisors and discuss how our policies impact them on a daily basis,” said Superintendent Barge in an August 9th media release. “We want to make education work for all Georgia’s students, and hearing directly from them is the best way to ensure that happens.”
In 2012, Jamesia Robinson of Grady High School represented the district on the council.  In 2011, APS student Jasmine Davis, a senior at Frederick Douglass High School served as the district’s representative.
Meeting dates are: September 27, 2013, February. 14, 2014 and May 2, 2014.  Students interested in applying for the Council should contact Ron Culver at rculver@doe.k12.ga.us.  For more information or to download the application, visit the Student Advisory Council’s website.

Members meet two times throughout the school year with State Superintendent and are advisors that act as liaisons between the Department of Education and the students of Georgia. Students may apply for the advisory council at the beginning of each school year by obtaining an application from their school or from this website. Members are chosen by a committee of Georgia Department of Education representatives based on the applicant’s response to questions. Past topics discussed by the student advisory council include: the school dropout rate, student leadership, communication/messaging, the Georgia graduation rule, testing, school climate, and career, technical, and agricultural education.

    The Spirit of Innovation Challenge

The Spirit of Innovation Challenge (http://www.conradawards.org/pages/students)

The next opportunity to achieve greatness is now open!
The Conrad Foundation believes high school students have the potential to create the next world-changing, commercially-viable product or service. The Spirit of Innovation Challenge invites students ages 13 – 18 from around the globe to Get Their Genius On and conceptualize a solution in the areas of:

    o    Aviation and Aeronautics

    o    Cybersecurity and Technology

    o    Energy and Environment

    o    Health and Nutrition

Prove you have what it takes to change the world in the Spirit of Innovation Challenge!

    Why Take the Challenge?
Because we believe you have the ability to make the world a better place. Each year we challenge you to address global sustainability by creating an innovative product or service using science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Just as entrepreneurs must succinctly pitch their ideas, you will enter by working with a team to submit a proposal by answering only four questions about your project. Plus, you will also have access to mentors, webinar, videos, articles and resources to help you innovate and excel as an entrepreneur. Students who advance through the challenge receive the opportunity to submit a full business and technical plan as well as graphical representation of their project. You don’t need to create a prototype, but you are welcome to do so if you want the extra challenge!

    What’s the Incentive?
Finalist teams receive a travel grant to present at the 2014 Innovation Summit at NASA Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston for a chance to win a $10,000 seed grant to develop their product or service.
