Turner Voices Youth Media Institute

Turner Voices Youth Media Institute is a week-long intensive “All Things Turner Broadcasting System” program focused on leadership and media career development held the last week in June on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
Ever wanted to go behind the scenes during a newscast or learn the ins and outs at any Turner Broadcasting System’s network? Here’s your chance to learn more about the media industry, the wide array of career opportunities available and the leadership skills it takes to make it in any business. Sponsored by Turner Broadcasting System, Turner Voices Youth Media Institute takes you through a jam-packed week of workshops and roundtables led by & Turner Broadcasting System executives, in-depth tours of CNN or Turner Studios and dynamic networking events with Turner Broadcasting System employees. Plus, you’ll “make the pitch” to Turner executives at week’s end in a competitive, team-based media challenge.

JA Fellows Outstanding Young Business Person Award

The Outstanding Young Business Person is a 9th-12th student who embraces opportunity and entrepreneurship, has a clear desire to be a better person, promotes innovative thinking, and continues to grow personally and professionally. We are looking for students who demonstrate growth over their JA Fellows experience. The OYBP will be able to acknowledge challenges they faced in their company and how they overcame those challenges. This person will display professionalism, great communication skills, and have an interest in pursuing a career in business.

  

There are two stages for this category:
o Part 1 – Essay & Student Resume submission
o Part 2 – In-person Interview
OYBP Part 1 - Essay
The first part of the individual competition requires all interested students to e-mail a 250-500 word response to the statement below along with a current student resume by 8:00p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2016 to jafellowsdocs@gmail.com.
Responses are to be typed as a professional word document and included as an attachment.
The students with the top responses will move onto the second phase consisting of an in-person
interview. Please, note that you have to be present the day of the competition for the interview.
No Skype or phone interviews will be permitted.
Essay Question

The JA Fellows theme this year is Business Etiquette: Professional Skills for Tomorrow. Please describe what business etiquette means to you and how you have exemplified and embodied the concept while in the JA Fellows program. Likewise, please explain how the concept of business etiquette has shaped your understanding of business, and how the concept can be translated to your academics, your personal life, and the relationships that you have built with your peers and mentors. Lastly,  as a JA Fellows, you’ve had the opportunity to become a real entrepreneur. How has this experience impacted your personal growth as a young professional, and how has this program influenced your post-secondary plans? 
 
OYBP Part 2: Interview
Interviews will take place at the annual competition in front of a panel of judges. Student must be
present the day of the competition (Skype or phone interviews are not permitted).
Interviews will be a maximum of 10 minutes in length and may cover any aspect of your JA Fellows experience. Should any questions be asked about current events or trends (from a business perspective), all students will be given the same prior notice about the potential topics or questions.


JA Fellows 2016 Senior Scholarship

The JA Fellows Senior Scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors who best exemplify the passion and spirit of the JA Fellows program.

Scholarships will be awarded based on a combination of the completed application, feedback from volunteers and staff, and demonstrated financial need.  Financial need is not a necessary component of the scholarship but could be a contributing factor.

In our first year "Basic Camp," students attend a one-week overnight camp on a university campus. Youth spend the week engaged in Mergers and Acquisitions transaction simulations, working in teams of seven. During the week, the student teams assume the leadership of their assigned corporation by acting as the executive management committee and begin their due diligence by researching their company's Annual Report.

Bank of America Student Leaders - Application Deadline 01/29/2016

Bank of America is looking for the next generation of community leaders. If you are a junior or senior in high school with a passion for improving your community, we want to support you. 

As a Student Leader, you will participate in an eight-week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization where you will learn first-hand about the needs of your community and the critical role nonprofits play. In addition, you will learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills. Each Student Leader will attend the Student Leaders Summit held in Washington, D.C. where you will learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs. 

To become a Student Leader, you must:


  • Currently be a junior or senior in high school
  • Be able to participate in an 8-week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization and work 35 hours a week
  • Be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship through the end of September 2016
  • Be able to participate in a week-long Student Leders Summit in Washington, DC (July 10 - July 15, 2016) (All expenses paid. This week will be part of your 8-week experience.)
  • Be a student in good standing at your school
  • Obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator.
Please note, Bank of America employees or members of their family are NOT eligible for nomination.   • Legal citizen of the U.S.A

  • A legal resident of the state of Georgia for at least three years prior to application

  • Demonstrate high moral qualities

  • Earned a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, OR be in the upper 15% of his/her graduating class

  • SAT (math and reading) of at least 1300

  • Accepted into a four-year accredited college or university to pursue an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Engineering, or one of the Physical Sciences

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student

  •  Demonstrate a commitment to community service

Scholarship Opportunity: Nancy Penn Lyons Scholarship Fund

Purpose

For students with financial need who have been accepted for enrollment at prestigious or out-of-state universities.

  •  Legal resident of Georgia at least one year prior to application

  •  A graduating high school senior

  •  A combined SAT score of 1000 or higher (Math and Critical Reading only) / ACT composite of 22 or higher

  •  Demonstrated financial need

  •  Preference will be given to students attending selective private or out-of-state institutions

  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher

  • Demonstrated history of commitment to community service

  • Students attending public colleges or universities in the state of Georgia are not eligible to receive this scholarship

 

Award Amount

$5,000 annually for up to four years

Up to five new awards annually
