Summer Internship Opportunities


 
The Youth Department of the Latin American Association will be holding its annual Summer Academic Program at Sequoyah M.S. and a Summer Bridge Program at Cross Keys H.S.

Both programs are designed to meet the unique needs of Latino youth and help them take steps towards overcoming the educational achievement gap. The academics are focused on the Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Spanish and supplemented with cultural enrichment activities. The Summer Bridge Program at Cross Keys High School focuses on preparing rising 9th and 10th grade cohorts to the core subject areas shown above.

Position Description:The main function of the Tutor-Mentor Interns in both programs is to empower youth to believe in their immense potential. In order to achieve this we need you to create valuable learning experiences for the participants. Each intern will receive hands on experience with working with Latino youth, and working in the educational sector M.S. & H.S.  All interns will receive diversity training specifically on working with Latino youth and their families and have the opportunity to collaborate with teachers, staff and practitioners.  Tutor-Mentors will be placed at one of two sites pending on request and qualifications.         
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Assist with the development of lesson plan
* Build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and teachers
* Maintain portfolios and assessments for students in your class
* Teach college prep course and/or enrichment activity to middle or high school students e.g. college awareness, leadership and personal skills development
* Lead small group discussions
* Assist students with final group projects and end of program celebration
* Support Site Coordinator and other staff as needed 
 
Time Commitment: Full month of June (4 days a week) - 40 hours a week (Flex hours and part-time opportunities available upon request) 
     
Qualifications:
* Must be currently enrolled in college and completed two years of course work or recent college graduate
* Experience working in a bilingual, bicultural environment
* Ability to tutor students in at least one of the core subject areas
* Reliable, and willing to work as a team player and independently
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
* Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
* Must successfully pass a background check
* Must have reliable transportation
* Must be able to attend mandatory trainings workshops as well as on-the-job training.
