Walmart First-Generation Summer Scholarship

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Walmart are proud to offer financial assistance to graduating high school students who will be the first in their families to attend any one of the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the TMCF member-school network. The Walmart First Generation Scholarship is open to all graduating high school seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Selected scholars will receive a campus mentor and a one-year merit scholarship of $6,200 for the 2014-2015 academic school year, which will be used to cover the costs of tuition and fees, on-campus room and board and required textbooks purchased from member-schools. The funds are applied in the fall and spring semesters at $3,100 per semester. This scholarship is not renewable.


Requirements.
  • Graduating high school senior 
  • Be a first generation student 
  • Be enrolled or plan to attend as a full-time freshman student one of TMCF’s 47 member-schools for the 2014-2015 academic school year 
  • Have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher 
  • Have demonstrated leadership ability through a variety of measures 
  • Be a United States citizen
Applicants must also submit the following documents for consideration:
  • Resume (include community service, leadership and employment/internship experience)
  • 2014-2015 Student Aid Report (received from filing FAFSA)
  • Most recent transcript
  • Current Recommendation from current school faculty member (only one letter)
  • Essay: In a minimum of 500 words, please address one of the following questions
    • What does it mean to be the first person in your family to receive a college degree?
