The Vernon E. Carne Scholarship will be distributed as follows:
1st Place Recipient: $3,000
2nd Place Recipient: $2,0003rd Place Recipient: $1,000Top 8 Runners-Up: $500 each
Eligibility
- Applicants (or their parents) must be a member of Georgia United Credit Union.
- Applicants must be a high school student classified as a senior with an anticipated graduation date of 2014.
- This scholarship is open to any student who meets both of the above criteria and is entering a college/university or technical school by fall of 2014. Applicants must be accepted to a college/university or technical school by March 1, 2014, and verification of acceptance must be provided to the Credit Union.
Requirements
- Applicants are required to submit a typed, doubled spaced essay of 250 words or less.
Applicants are asked to write on the following topic:
Explain how the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” provides an alternative to large commercial banks and can help consumers during these challenging economic times.
- Complete the application and submit a high school transcript (obtained from your school counselor) including your SAT or ACT scores. Additional consideration will be given to students based on academic standing, school leadership, and school/community involvement.

Judging
Judging will take place in mid-March and will be conducted by a judges panel selected by Georgia United Credit Union. Points will be tabulated to determine the winners. All decisions are final. Winners will be notified in writing announced in the Spring Quarterly Newsletter and on Georgia United’s website.Other Information
The maximum award is $3,000 for a first-time, full-time freshman. The 2nd place winner will receive $2,000 and the 3rd place winner will receive $1,000. Eight runner-up awards in the amount $500 will also be awarded. Awards can be used to help pay tuition, housing, books or meal costs and will be paid directly to the college, university or technical school by Georgia United Credit Union. There is no restriction to the applicant’s county of residence.Winners agree to have their names/photos published in Georgia United Credit Union publications and press releases.
*Immediate family members of Georgia United employees or Board members are not eligible.
**Any member who enters both the Vernon Carne Scholarship and Catholic Scholarship programs will be awarded only one scholarship (whichever amount is higher.)
