Youth Leadership Sandy Springs is a unique opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in developing leadership skills, investigating the issues facing Sandy Springs and discovering opportunities for service.

In YLSS, students explore Sandy Springs, looking at its government, environment, social service agencies, public safety and economic development.  Classes meet at city hall, on the Chattahoochee River, behind the scenes at the police department, in jail, courtrooms and inside historic homes. Students work with business, civic and government leaders to understand what shapes our community.
From what they learn about Sandy Springs and its needs, class members will create a group service project in the spring.

Reminder: JA Fellows - Outstanding Young Business Person Award

Criteria

Ø  The Outstanding Young Business Person is a 9^th-12th student who embraces opportunity and entrepreneurship, has a clear desire to be a better person, promotes innovative thinking and continues to grow personally and professionally.  We are looking for students who demonstrate growth over their JA Fellows experience. The OYBP will be able to acknowledge challenges they faced in their company and how they overcame those challenges.  This person will display professionalism, great communication skills, and have in interest in pursuing a career in business.

Ø  There are two stages to this award:

o   Part 1 – Essay

o   Part 2 – In-person Interview

OYBP Part 1 - Essay

Ø   The first part of the individual competition requires all interested students to e-mail a 250-500 word response to the statement below by 12:00pm on Friday, February 14, 2014 to jafellowsdocs@gmail.com.

Ø  Responses are to be typed in a word document and included as an attachment. 

Ø  The students with the top responses will move onto the second phase consisting of an in-person interview.  Please, note that you have to be present the day of the competition for the interview. No Skype or phone interviews will be permitted.

 

Essay Question

As a JA Fellow, you have experienced firsthand the successes and challenges of running a company.  What were some of those challenges?  Describe how your strongest professional skills have enhanced through your experience in the Fellows program?  Give examples of your creativity –ability to see alternatives, come up with many, varied or original ideas, take diverse perspectives; or willingness to try new things.  Describe the process of trying to implement innovation into your company.  How has the program influenced your future decisions? 

OYBP Part 2: Interview

Ø  Interviews will take place at the annual competition in front of a panel of judges.  Student must be present the day of the competition (Skype or phone interviews are not permitted).

Ø  Interviews will be a maximum of 10 minutes in length and may cover any aspect of your JA Fellows experience.  Should any questions be asked about current events or trends (from a business perspective), all students will be given the same prior notice about the potential topics or questions. 

 

Reminder: JA Fellows Senior Scholarship

The JA Fellows Senior Scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors who best exemplify the passion and spirit of the JA Fellows program.

Scholarships will be awarded based on a combination of the completed application, feedback from volunteers and staff, and demonstrated financial need.  Financial need is not a necessary component of the scholarship but could be a contributing factor.

Amazing Turner Voices Career Programs!!!

Turner Voices in the Arts is a program for high school age youth with an interest in learning more about artistic and creative careers at Turner. This week-long exploration will introduce youth to different creative career fields and will incorporate hands-on learning, tours, panels, speakers and special events, including outings to local arts establishments. This 20-student program will provide a meaningful experience for teens to engage with Turner employees and programming. Students apply on an individual basis, will be required to complete an application and provide a creative sample. An interview will be offered to finalists. Program dates are Monday, June 10 – Friday, June 14 from 10:00am – 3:00pm. Deadline to apply Saturday, March 1, 2014.

Turner Voices in Technology is a single-day, group workshop that explores technology careers at Turner and is offered to youth-focused nonprofits or schools with 501c3 affiliation. This experience will introduce the youth to one of several Turner technology-centered areas of business, including Turner Studios, Animation and Special Effects, Digital Properties, Emerging Technology, Network and Broadcast Operations and Enterprise Applications. Turner employees will engage with youth and lead activities that include speakers, panels, tours, and hands-on activities. Workshops accommodate up to 30 students. Nonprofits choose an area of interest upon applying. Turner will work with selected groups to find a date for the workshop.  Deadline to apply Saturday, March 1, 2014.

2014 Summer Internship Program.

The TAG-Ed Summer Internship Program provides high-achieving students with strong STEM aptitude and interest real-world experiences. Students are placed in companies interested in investing in STEM talent and impacting the future technology workforce. Matches are based on related interests, qualifications, and project requirements.

The internship is for five (5) consecutive weeks, with interns working an average 20-30 hours/week. Students are paid $200 per week by their host company at the end of the completed assignment

VolunTEEN Program

The summer VolunTEEN Program at Children's is available for high school students ages 15 to 18. VolunTEENs are placed in areas throughout the hospital ranging from customer service to direct patient and family interaction (e.g.: Family Library, Gift Shop, Art Cart). Volunteers will not shadow any clinical staff, but will be supervised by Children's staff. The program spans 8 weeks during June and July. Interested teens MUST be able to commit to volunteer at least one day a week for 5 hours, missing no more than two days.
