What is the Field Studies Experience?
Sewanee's Pre-College Field Studies Experience is a summer residential program for talented students who are passionate about the outdoors and interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in the study of the environment.

Led by full-time faculty at the University of the South and utilizing its 13,000-acre campus atop the ecologically diverse Cumberland Plateau, the program provides an interdisciplinary introduction to environmental studies.

‌‌This two-week experience explores the diverse ecosystems of the Cumberland Plateau: its forests, coves, streams, lakes, wetlands, and caves. Students participate in ecological exploration with senior faculty examining the plant and animal species that inhabit these ecosystems and use archeological techniques, along with GIS and GPS technology, to study how people have used and changed these ecosystems over time. Students learn how conservation strategies are currently being employed to protect the integrity of Plateau ecosystems into the future.
The experience is conducted almost exclusively in the field, featuring field mapping equipment, digital photography, ecological assessment techniques and group research projects. As part of this experience, students have the opportunity to take part in a number of outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, bouldering, canoeing, caving, and mountain biking.

For the summer 2015 program, participants will arrive on Sunday, June 28 and depart at noon on Saturday, July 11.

CDC Disease Detective Camp

CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC) is an educational program started by CDC′s David J. Sencer CDC Museum in 2005 as a mechanism for developing a public health camp curriculum for state and county health departments. The camp is open to upcoming high school juniors and seniors and is held at CDC's headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

The CDC Disease Detective Camp curriculum is based on contextual and situated cognition learning principles. By learning through hands–on activities and seminars, high school juniors and seniors at the conclusion of the camp will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic epidemiology terms
  • Calculate basic epidemiologic rates given an outbreak scenario and data
  • Recognize how infectious and chronic diseases are tracked in the United States
  • Understand the role of public health law in protecting the public′s health in the United States

Over the course of five days, campers will take on the role of disease detectives and learn first–hand how the CDC safeguards the nation′s health. Teams will probe a disease outbreak using epidemiologic and laboratory skills and report their findings to a group of CDC scientists. Activities may include short lectures by CDC experts, a mock press conference in the CDC press room, and a look behind the scenes of CDC.

Ty Cobb Educational Foundation

Ty Cobb Educational Foundation

The Foundation was established by the late Tyrus R. Cobb for the purpose of assisting capable and deserving residents of Georgia who need financial assistance in completing their college education.
Foundation scholarships are granted to qualified students for the purpose of attending an accredited college or university full time.
Although Ty Cobb’s top annual salary as a baseball player was less than $40,000, his shrewd investments made him a financial success at an early age.
One of the many investments that contributed to his early success was the purchase of stock in a little-known Southern beverage company called Coca-Cola. Cobb’s financial prosperity eventually allowed him to establish a scholarship program that has to date assisted thousands of Georgians to attend college.

New Applicants Eligibility

Undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia, have demonstrated financial need, and have completed at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of academic credits with an average of “B” or higher in an accredited college or university are eligible to apply for Ty Cobb scholarships.
Students with higher academic averages and the greatest financial need will be given priority.
All forms and information must be postmarked by June 15. The transcript must be official and must include grades of the current spring semester or quarter.

1. A completed application form including a section stating the specific circumstances which cause you to request financial assistance.

2. A letter of recommendation from your academic dean or advisor.
