High School Student-Interns at Southern Center for International Studies

The High School Student-Internship is a 15-week (one academic semester) internship. The Southern Center selects new high-school interns for the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. During each academic term, one high school student-intern works in the Southern Center's Research Library. He/she generally spends 10-15 hours per week helping with a variety of research tasks as well as developing his/her own research project on a chosen international topic. The High School Student-Intern internships are voluntary, but the Southern Center offers a stipend of up to $200 to cover transportation costs. Some schools provide academic credit for the student-internship.

The specific course of study carried out by High School Student-Interns includes:  

• using 70% of their time at the Center to complete a research project on an international topic of their own choosing, leading a staff-wide class on their topic at the culmination of their project, attending SCIS programs when possible, tracking current events and compiling stories for inclusion in the Center's timeline of international events, assisting SCIS Research Associates, Research Assistants, and College/Masters student-interns with general research tasks,
• attending and participating in the Center's regular courses.

Qualifications

To qualify for the High School Student-Internship, an applicant must be at least 16 years of age, have a strong interest in international affairs, have good computer skills, be able to perform detail-oriented tasks, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
