Now Accepting Applications

Georgia State Superintendent of School's

2016 Student Advisor Council

The State Superintendent of School’s student advisory council is a group of about 50 high school students from across the state who discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students throughout Georgia. Members meet two times throughout the school year with State Superintendent and are advisors that act as liaisons between the Department of Education and the students of Georgia. Students may apply for the advisory council at the beginning of each school year by obtaining an application from their school or from this website. Members are chosen by a committee of Georgia Department of Education representatives based on the applicant’s response to questions. Past topics discussed by the student advisory council include: the school dropout rate, student leadership, communication/messaging, the Georgia graduation rule, testing, school climate, and career, technical, and agricultural education.

2016 Student Advisory Council Applications are available here.

JA Alumni Spotlight: Macario Butler

JA Alumni Spotlight: Macario Butler

In anticipation of our first ever Student & Alumni Networking Night, we are featuring a JA alum each week leading up to the July 28th event! This week, we caught up with Macario, a rising sophomore and Food Science Major at the University of Kentucky.

Macario Butler
University of Kentucky '19
JA Fellows '15

Years Participated in the JA Fellows Program:
2013 - 2015

Current School & Occupation:
Rising Sophomore at the University of Kentucky & Tyson Foods Intern

Why are you excited to attend the first ever JA Fellows Student & Alumni Networking Night? I am excited to attend the JA Student & Alumni Networking Night because I believe that maintaining past connections with an organization such as Junior Achievement is very important. I am also excited to interact with current JA Fellows members and learn about their goals and aspirations for the future.

What is your favorite memory from your time in Junior Achievement?
My favorite memory from Junior Achievement was during the 25th Annual JA Atlanta Business Hall of Fame Ceremony. I truly enjoyed having the opportunity to share my story on how JA of Georgia has impacted my life in an awesome way. Junior Achievement allows you to go outside of your comfort zone by creating an environment for you to be successful.

How has your experience with Junior Achievement impacted you since high school?
Junior Achievement has impacted my life in an amazing way. JA taught me the importance of taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. I have been blessed with a wide variety of opportunities during my freshman year at the University of Kentucky. I have connected with a few chief executive officers of top food corporations including: Papa John's and Fazoli's. I will also serve as a Resident Advisor at the University of Kentucky for the upcoming academic year.

Do you still keep in contact with anyone you met through Junior Achievement?
I am still connected with most of my former teammates and other alumni members via text or through social media. In the JA Fellows Program, you have the opportunity to build strong relationships because of the opportunities JA provides to their students.

We look forward to seeing all of our guests this Thursday at the event! If you were not able to attend this year's Student & Alumni Networking Night, stay tuned for a recap of the event and more opportunities to stay connected to JA.

JA Alumni Spotlight: Keturah Walker

JA Alumni Spotlight: Keturah Walker

In anticipation of our first ever Student & Alumni Networking Night, we are featuring a JA alum each week leading up to the July 28th event! This week, we caught up with Keturah, a rising junior at Brandeis University and a JA Fellows alum of 2014.

Keturah Walker
Brandeis University '18
JA Fellows '14

Years Participated in the JA Fellows Program:
2011-2014

Current School & Occupation:
Rising Junior at Brandeis University & Summer Intern at the Alliance Theatre

Why are you excited to attend the first ever JA Fellows Student & Alumni Networking Night? I am excited for the first ever Student & Alumni Networking Night because it will give students a real life example of people who have once been in their position as Fellows and are now either well into their careers or headed in that direction. This will make it real for students to understand that JA isn't just some program that is on their resume, but it is also something that has impacted real people. It will also give the students a chance to network and have future mentors who will be more than happy to help with many things because of their mutual network (JA Fellows).

What is your favorite memory from your time in Junior Achievement?
One of my favorite memories from JA Fellows was when one of my teams was struggling to find an innovative idea that would potentially be our product. We all had multiple ideas of what the product should have been, but they were all conflicting. We struggled so much that our company was one of the last companies to choose a product, and we had less time to sell, choose and order the materials and packaging, and most importantly, bond and build as a company. This time of struggle was my favorite memory because it showed me that failure is merely an alternate route to success. Sometimes you have to fail in order to learn from your mistakes and improve them for the most effective outcome.

How has your experience with Junior Achievement impacted you since high school?
After high school, I went on to college to co-create an auxiliary dance team/club with a few of my peers. I became the president, and the basic business and financial literacy skills that I obtained through JA were really helpful in getting that started. I also use most, if not all, of the basic skills that I obtained from JA daily, such as teamwork, communication, and articulation of innovative ideas.
